Artistic Statement

When words fall short, movement helps me best describe and express myself. Dance has become my outlet in life: it is my medicine, my sanity and what keeps me grounded. Movement has helped me heal, connect with myself on a deeper level, and makes me feel most alive. It is my way of being and becoming more of who I truly am in the most vulnerable form.

I believe in pushing limits and taking risks with creative expression in choreography. My work contains bold, athletic movement that encompasses ever-changing shifts in quality, direction, utilizes breath and weight, and tells a story. The story is not necessarily a specific narrative, but it evokes a strong feeling and connection to the work on a personal level to those watching, often leaving them reflective, inspired, or considerate of other perspectives. My hard-hitting movement mixed with subtle details is a signature in my work. Quite frequently, there is athleticism mixed with grace. I seek contrast within a piece while still maintaining cohesiveness to the theme. I take my classical training in modern, ballet, jazz, and other various forms of dance and infuse theatrical expression and gesture throughout.

Dance is a way of healing and finding acceptance within one’s own life. Socially charged work and personal experiences have motivated my creative endeavors. My mission is to bring awareness to the surface that which remains unseen or unspoken. Everyone has a story to tell- I tell mine through my body.

Dance had brought me out of my shell as a young girl and has taught me the strength, passion, perseverance, grace and grit needed to pursue what I strive for in life. In hopes of igniting a spark of hope, passion, and joy within my students, I believe in nurturing not only the dancer, but also the human being inside. With a fitness background, I also stress alignment and form in order to prevent injury. I see dance as going beyond the physical practice and implementing life lessons. Having taught in a variety of settings with various ages and abilities, it is important for me to create a safe, respectful, judgment-free environment in which all dancers can thrive, learn from one another and develop their own artistic voice.

Here's what others have to say:

"I loved taking class with you because it brought me back to being grounded, not just physically but mentally as well. In a world so chaotic, with the virus, moving to online, and needing to be 5 places at once, taking time for yourself as a dancer and a person was a wonderful experience to have. This is how I felt every time I took class with you in the fall. The exercises were repeated but I was able to learn a new thing about myself each time because I would tap into a deeper level of my dance consciousness every time. I will always carry the message of finding positivity and looking through a new lens for every experience."

"Taking modern with Lara was a joyful experience, as we were given the opportunity to dig deep into various modern styles and explore different concepts with our minds and bodies. I have never been one with the floor but I can say that after this course, I had become overly comfortable giving everything I am into it. The energy provided by Lara was motivating and inspirational which added into making the class a fun, positive, and comfortable environment for all where we could be completely ourselves."
